Okay, the title was a joke, I’m not leaving in the short to medium term.
But here’s the thing. Some people, rather pivotal people in the community, are considering a move. While their decision is solely theirs to make, I would like to strongly encourage them to have another think.
As I like to say:
Don’t let your ideologies confund your view of the future.
Microsoft most likely won’t be stupid enough to kill modding. Modding is what makes Minecraft as it is so attractive. Thanks to FTB, TechnicPlatform, ATLauncher, modding is now readily more accessible to the public. If Microsoft kills that, it’s a complete idiotic move, and from what I’ve seen of Satya Nadella he isn’t capable of such dumbassery. Modding will likely still carry on in some form.
The problem is, though, despite how much it is covered up, modding as it is is still hacks all around. There is no proper API, thus forcing us to rely on Forge/Sponge. If Microsoft is able to leverage resources to push out a proper modding API and things like that, this acquisition may just be the start of a new age of Minecraft modding.
But if Microsoft screws things up, and they MIGHT, I might consider leaving Minecraft modding. I’ve plenty of things to do anyway…
That’s all I’ll say regarding the matter. For now, the only pragmatic and feasible approach is the wait-and-see approach. Don’t go running to the lifeboats yet, people.
